Do you really believe that your air conditioner, once installed, will serve you well for many decades? That is, assuming the installation was done properly. Installation is the starting point for both the room’s comfort and the air conditioner’s longevity. Little errors in installation might have a devastating effect on the functioning of the air conditioner. These are the top 5 aircon installation mistakes that you should never do.

1. Wrong Size of the AC Unit:

Different sized air conditioners have varying maximum cooling capacities. Tons, or tonnes, measure an air conditioner’s cooling capability in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry. British Thermal Units (BTUs) are the standard for calculating tonnage. The improper size central air conditioner or ductless mini-split system may cause problems in your home. Large air conditioners in tiny rooms dry out the air excessively and waste a lot of electricity.

A similarly undersized air conditioner would struggle to keep the room cool even when running at full blast and will quickly wear out. Whether an apartment, house, shop, fitness centre, movie theatre, etc., the number of people who are always present inside, the amount of heat-generating equipment, and the features of the room (ceiling height, number of doors and windows, etc.) all play a role in determining the capacity of the air conditioning system.

Expert HVAC specialists should be consulted for advice on the necessary capacity for your space. Get an appropriate size air conditioner to maintain a pleasant temperature in your house.

2. Wrong Placement of the Air Conditioner:

The air conditioner’s ability to save energy is proportional to its location. The outside unit should be situated in a cool, shaded area. But, you should keep it away from the plants and trees that could block the breeze.

The indoor unit’s positioning also has a role in the room’s overall comfort. Avoid placing an air conditioner directly above a sleeping area, a storage area, a main traffic area, or a place of work as it is among the common aircon installation mistake.  Remember that you need at least 10 to 15 cm of clearance between the air conditioner and any nearby floor or furniture. Plan ahead for the best location for your HVAC system.

3. The Thermostat was Installed Improperly:

The purpose of a thermostat is to track and control a building’s temperature. The system is often turned on by the thermostat when the temperature in the room is higher than the set average and off when it is too cold.

Therefore, this apparatus is utilised to maintain a constant, comfortable temperature. The thermostat must be installed in the correct location for it to work properly. Why? The performance of your air conditioner might be impacted if the thermostat is installed in an improper spot.

Putting the thermostat in bright sunlight or near other heat sources can cause it to work harder and ultimately drive up your power cost. Furthermore, the thermostat shouldn’t be in the direct path of the air conditioner’s air ducts.

4. Installation Without a Leak Check:

One typical error following AC installation is not checking for refrigerant leaks. The reality is that, following installation, you need to check the refrigerant level right away. If a leak check isn’t done on time, it might cause major problems.

Your energy costs will increase by 20% for every 10% of refrigerant that escapes. The whole air conditioner might overheat and break down without a good leak check, resulting in expensive repairs.

A refrigerant leak may also cause the compressor insulation to darken, a burning odour to develop, the HVAC system to become less efficient even while running at full power, etc. There must be a thorough leak check performed alongside the AC installation.

5. Drainage System That was Poorly Built:

The drainage system’s primary role is to remove condensation from the air conditioner’s inside unit. Moisture condenses on the internal or exterior heat exchanger while the air conditioner is in cooling or heating mode. Damage to drywall, clogged pipes, mould development, and unpleasant odours are just some of the problems that may arise if this moisture is not filtered away effectively from a house or business facility.

Signs your AC is not Installed Properly:

You won’t be as comfortable, and your air conditioner won’t last as long if it’s installed incorrectly. These are three clues that the air conditioner wasn’t properly installed in your home.

· Poor Airflow:

Poor AC installations are a typical source of inadequate airflow. A lot of the cooled air might be escaping into your home’s crawlspace or walls if the interior unit isn’t correctly connected to the ducts. Energy and money are being wasted due to air leakage.

Incorrect load estimations might potentially lead to insufficient airflow. A poorly sized or oversized air conditioning system is the result of an incorrect calculation of the cooling demand of your house.

· Insufficient Amount of Refrigerant:

The inefficient performance and energy waste might result from incorrectly charging the refrigerant. If there isn’t enough refrigerant in the system, your house won’t be properly cooled or dehumidified. The compressor of an air conditioner might be damaged by excessive pressure if there is too much refrigerant.

· Shocking Noises:

A concrete pad should be used to support the exterior condenser of your air conditioner. The size of the pad must be big enough to accommodate all four of the unit’s legs. Equally important is a level pad. The condenser will shake, wobble, and vibrate with each cooling cycle if it is not properly levelled.

This will throw it much more off alignment. Mechanical components, sensors, and wiring may all suffer from excessive wear if the shaking continues over an extended period of time. There might be a lot of noise coming from the air conditioner if the moving components weren’t properly tightened or oiled.
